The theme of this year's Climate Week, taking place September 22-29, is "It's Time." Every year, Climate Week NYC hosts hundreds of events and activities across the 5 boroughs. In 2024, their emphasis is on breaking down barriers NOW to accelerate advancements in renewable energy, environmental protections, and material innovation.
During Climate Week, on Tuesday, September 24 at 1-3pm, the Museum will host a panel discussion presented by MassTimber@MSU and the Colorado Mass Timber Coalition. Lindsey Wikstrom, author of Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures (Routledge, 2023), will moderate a panel of mass timber leaders from across the U.S. who will highlight programs, policies, people, and practices that are advancing mass timber ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, Michigan/the Great Lakes Region, Georgia, New England, and New York City. For the building sector, climate advocacy NOW means investing in low carbon steel and concrete technologies, or finding alternatives. The Museum has been championing sustainable building with our current focus on Mass Timber, a new family of engineered wood products that greatly reduces the harmful environmental impact of new buildings. Over the past 6 months, we have presented an 8-part "semester" of talks that have explored the short but promising history of Mass Timber and its potential to transform the building industry. We invite you to take a deep dive into mass timber this Climate Week by watching the lectures.
In all, there are more than 10 hours of lectures that cover topics from embodied energy and life-cycle analysis to presentations by leading architects of the Mass Timber movement, reflecting on a decade of their work. The series is an extension of our exhibition TALL TIMBER: The Future of Cities in Wood, which you can view at our lower Manhattan gallery Wednesday - Saturday, 12pm-6pm. The Museum is grateful for the support of Elise Jaffe + Jeffrey Brown for a continuing lecture series that honors our late trustee, the extraordinary structural engineer Leslie E. Robertson. Little could we have imagined that in spring 2024, Jeffrey Brown would also pass away. Thus this series – which explores an optimistic future for architecture – is dedicated to Jeffrey Brown.
The video begins with an introduction by moderator Lindsey Wikstrom, followed by presentations by each of the panelists. After the presentations, the panelists engage in a Q&A with Wikstrom and the audience.
