Wuhan, China
Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province and the largest city in central China with a population of nearly 8 million, has been a center for supertall ambitions. To be completed in 2019, Riverview Plaza A1 is the tallest of three towers of Riverview Plaza Development designed in 2009 by the US firm Pelli Clarke Pelli. Other supertalls in Wuhan are Wuhan Center and Wuhan Greenland Center.
At 436 m. / 1,430 ft., the mixed-use tower features 45 office floors and a 5-star hotel above with breathtaking views of the city and the Yangtze River. The base of the building is connected with a 4-level retail podium with restaurants and an outdoor garden. The façade system of the building is inspired by the decorative elements in traditional Chinese architecture. The pattern of the curtain wall emulated the conventional window pattern screens in the region. As a contemporary interpretation of tradition, the glass panels consisted efficient double glazing units complying with LEED standards.
