TALL TIMBER grew out of the exhibition REFRAMED: The Future of Cities in Wood, co-curated by the Chicago Architecture Center and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) and presented at the Chicago Architecture Center in 2023. The groundwork for that exhibition drew on the extended research of the CTBUH into the adoption of Mass Timber technology to high-rise buildings internationally which was explored in a series of conferences, papers, and documented in the valuable 2023 book Tall Timber: Mass Timber for High-Rise Buildings. The Museum is grateful to the CTBUH leadership on those projects by Antony Wood and Javier Quintana de Una and to their team. At the Chicago Architecture Center, REFRAMED was curated by Eve Fineman and Ian Spula, who generously shared their work and elements of their exhibition, in particular the panels on the carbon costs of building materials that have been incorporated into our installation. We also thank Daniel Safarik, Martina Dolejsova, Jessica Kok, and Chuck Mutscheller at CTBUH and Christian McTizic and Philip Nadasdy of the CAC.

We are immensely grateful to the individuals and firms who aided our research, answered queries, and helped with models, drawings, and photography for the exhibition. The Mass Timber movement is really a community, so to befriend one member is to meet them all. Our special mentor and macher was Jeff Spiritos of Spiritos Properties, who shared his deep knowledge of the industry and myriad connections to architects and engineers on both coasts. The architects whose work is included in the exhibition have been extremely generous with their time and work. Special thanks are due to Thomas Robinson and Jennifer Engler of LEVER Architects; Ben Kaiser of KAISER+PATH; Michael Green and Eva Ravenstein of MGA; Susan Jones and Matt Catrow of atelierjones; Jason Korb of Korb + Associates Architects; Todd Snapp, James Giebelhausen, and Megan Wakelfield of Perkins + Will, Chicago; Benton Johnson of SOM, Chicago; and Steven Paytner and Kyle Wyskiel of Gensler, Toronto.

Likewise among our New York colleagues, we are grateful to our friends at SHoP for their work and their spectacular models, especially to Chris Sharples, Bill Sharples, and Gregg Pasquarelli, along with Kendra Ho, Madeline Johnson, Charlie Wynter, and Michael Raymundo; to Matthias Altwicker of 3XN Architects; Rick Cook, Jared GIlbert, and Alex Ferrec of COOKFOX; Marianne Kwok, Brendan Lim, Ian Leung, and Darina Zlateva of KPF; Cara Eckholm; as well as Alan Organschi and Lindsey Wikstrom for their insightful drawings. The expert engineers who provided insight into the Mass Timber field include Michelle Roelofs of Arup; at Thornton Tomasetti, Jordan Komp, John Peronto, Joya Nuruddin, and Alejandro Fernandez; and Eric Karsh of Equilibrium. From of the  the building materials industry, we thank Laurent Waessa of the Laurent Waessa Quebec Wood Export Bureau; Jean-Marc Dubois and Marie De Guire of Nordic Structures; Laura Hasburgh, Marco Lo Ricco, and Alicia King of the Forest Products Lab/Building and Fire Sciences; and Tanya Luthi of Timber Lab.
