Located in Kuala Lumpur, Merdeka 118 will be the tallest building in Malaysia at 644 m. when completed in 2021. Merdeka means “Independence Day” in Malaysian. Stadium Merdeka, located next to this new building, was the site of the formal declaration of the Malaysian Independence. Merdeka 118 will be 192 m. taller than the current K.L. title holder, the twin Petronas Towers. The Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004 and the first buildings to hold the title outside the U.S. Kuala Lumpur, which has a population of 1.76 million, is the capital city of Malaysia, a country in Southeast Asia with a population of 31.3 million.

The building will be mixed-use, with residential, retail, and office space. The top 17 floors of the building will be occupied by the first Park Hyatt hotel in Malaysia. The office space will be occupied primarily by the new headquarters for Merdeka 118, Malaysia’s largest fund management company. The building also hopes to garner LEED platinum certification, part of Kuala Lumpur’s commitment to sustainability in new construction.
