Adrian Smith, the design principal for<br \/>\nChengdu Greenland cited the ice-capped mountains of China&#8217;s<br \/>\nSichuan province as his inspiration for the tower&#8217;s faceted form.\nEngineering the complex fa\u00e7ade and changing floor plate shapes<br \/>\nrequired an ingenious structural solution. The red pressure-tap<br \/>\nwind-tunnel model in this case, which was built to predict the<br \/>\nperformance requirements for the fa\u00e7ade, shows the full 101-story<br \/>\nheight of the tower zig-zagging in and out as angles. The resulting<br \/>\nshapes of floor plates shift as the tilted columns of the perimeter<br \/>\nwall lean in or out.
